Learning Theories And Comparison Education Essay

Andragogy is a widely used term to describe a theory and practice to teach adults. Malcolm Knowles, learning theory essay, adult educator and famous for the adoption of this theory, proposed the following assumptions of adult learners — self-directing, experience based, readiness to learning theory essay, immediacy of application, internal motivation and need to know why they need to learn.

Merriam, Sahran B. Adult learning: linking theory and practice, There are five traditional learning theories — behaviourist, humanist, cognitivist, social cognitivist and constructivist which are foundational to what we have come to understand about adult learning. Merriam et al. From the five traditional learning theories, learning theory essay, I will focus on the constructivism theory. By focusing on this theory, I will explore deeper the key concepts and noted theorists.

I will speak to why I chose this theory, the role of the learner and the instructor, and provide three classroom examples I would use to support this learning theory. The impact of constructivism on education: language, discourse, and meaning. Spring and experiential constructivism by Dewey Merriam et al. These are just a few of the theorists whom support the constructivist theory where the student is at the centre of learning.

Learning Theories. Vygotskys Social learning theories. Wikipedia, Learning Theory, Dewey emphasizes experience, experiment, purposeful learning, freedom, and other concepts of progressive education, learning theory essay. Dewey argues that the quality of an educational experience is critical and stresses the importance of the social and interactive processes of learning.

Constructivism is about people constructing their own understanding and knowledge of the world, through experience and then reflecting on those experiences. Learning is not passive but rather the learner uses interactive and adaptive skills for a more meaningful acquisition of knowledge. ETECConstructivism for adults, Constructivism modifies that role, learning theory essay, so that teachers help students to construct learning theory essay rather than to reproduce a series of facts.

The constructivist teacher provides tools such as problem-solving and inquiry-based learning activities with which students formulate learning theory essay test their ideas, draw conclusions and inferences, and pool and convey their learning theory essay in a collaborative learning environment, learning theory essay. Constructivism transforms the student from a passive recipient of information to an active participant in the learning process. Always guided by the teacher, students construct their knowledge actively rather than just mechanically ingesting knowledge from the teacher or the textbook.

Educational Broadcasting Corporation, Constructivism as a paradigm for teaching and learning, I chose this theory because it resonates with me not only from a teaching perspective but also from a learning perspective. I appreciate this style of facilitation as it provides the instructor and students the opportunity to create a meaningful learning environment which is most conducive to engaging the adult learner.

By developing problem-oriented learning activities which have meaning and are based on student interests, I would play an important role in this type of classroom. It would allow for flexibility in my instruction as this theory places high value on social interactions and collaborative learning which draws upon the experiences of learning theory essay learner and instructor. This style of instruction interests me as it promotes facilitation in a more dynamic way.

The teacher helps the learner understand what and why they need to know in order to solve problems. This classroom setting allows for a more holistic approach to facilitation and learning which may allow for interdisciplinary learning to take place.

The learner needs to learn how to learn by constructing knowledge from within and by participating fully in the learning process. The learner must understand that each person is the centre to the learning process and reflecting on their experiences is an important aspect to this theory.

The learner contributes to the knowledge construction by activating prior knowledge and personal experiences through independent work and group work. The learner will reflect on their own experiences and those of others.

Students will formulate their own questions while understanding no question is a wrong question. There is an expectation all participates will treat each other respect. The instructor facilitates, coaches, mediates, prompts and help students develop and assess their understanding by asking good interactive questions which are rooted in negotiation.

The instructor must consider the knowledge and experiences the students bring to class and create situations where the learner feels safe asking questions and then encouraging the learner to reflect on their own processes.

The instructor develops problem-oriented learning activities which have meaning, are purposeful, and are based on student interests. The instructor is responsible to ensure engaging activities and an environment the students can learn in. The instructor provides a multitude of resources from which the learners can construct their understanding, by creating a sharing and collaborative classroom atmosphere where students respect each other.

The instructor will use a variety of assessments such as reviewing student work, observations — taking into consideration points of view and tests.

Looking at the process is as important as the product. There are a number of ways to support learning through constructivism. It can be constructed, active, reflective, collaborative, inquiry-based and evolving. Educational Broadcasting Corporation, Constructivism as a paradigm for teaching and learning, Through exploration, I would find out from the learners, how they would like to see their learning structured and assessed, learning theory essay.

Following the assumptions of adult learning, I would tie constructivist learning techniques to these assumptions. Through introductions and discussions, I would ask why the learners are participating in the class.

From these conversations, I would be able to determine how best to facilitate the learning in the class.

If the learners are there for future needs rather learning theory essay an immediate needs, I would draw on the readiness for learning through instructional techniques that are experiential in nature to encourage the relevance of the learning materials.

Understanding adult learning is, for the most learning theory essay, driven by internal motivators such as job satisfaction, enhanced self-esteem, improved quality of life and personal fulfillment this may lead adults to learn beyond what might be required. Adult learners want to know why they need to know which ties into the intrinsic motivation to learn.

From this assumption, I would at the onset of class have an open discussion on why we are all here to learn, learning theory essay. I would use this open dialogue to adjust the facilitation as required. As students come to class with knowledge, ideas and understandings, I would use this as an opportunity to create new knowledge from their existing knowledge by having them build on what they already know.

One part of the curriculum would focus on Learning theory essay Based Learning PBL. Through a facilitated group discussion, I would have the students discuss how best they would like to resolve a presented problem. PBL is a style of active learning.

Problem-based learning, Once the problem is identified, they would discuss what they already know, what they need to know and where to access the new information. I would facilitate their learning by supporting, guiding and monitoring the learning process using the scaffolding process. Once the group work learning theory essay done, I would have the students work independently in self-directed study to further research the issues.

When that task was done, learning theory essay, they may have to readjust the findings to account for the new learning. As learners mature, it is said that they become more independent and self-directing. Communication between the learner and me is most important. As part learning theory essay a self-directed component, to help facilitate this, I would establish learning contracts for the students with the goals for the learning objectives, structure and sequence of activities, timelines for completion of activities, details about resource material for each goal, details about the grading procedures, feedback and evaluation on each goal and meeting requirements.

There would be negotiated predetermined projects in which students could choose from to support their self-directed learning. I would have the learner reflect on the learning and would have the group provide guided feedback to the learner.

I would be available or consultations as appropriate during the learning process. Learning theory essay of Waterloo, Centre for Teaching Excellence, Self-Directed Learning: A Four Step Process. With the assumptions of adult learners — self-directing, experience based, readiness to learn, immediacy of application, internal motivation and need to know why they need learning theory essay learn, constructivism is foundational to understanding much of adult learning theory and practice.
